If you suffer from "heartburn", technically referred to as gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GORD), your surgeon may have recommended laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery to treat this condition.
The word “Laparoscopic” is the medical term for keyhole surgery. Three or four little cuts are made in your tummy and tiny tube shaped instruments are passed into these incisions. The first tube (known as a Laparoscope) is connected to a high intensity light and a video camera so that the surgeon can see what is happening inside you.
The hernia is a weakness or hole of the tummy button (umbilicus) or tissue around the umbilicus (paraumbilical). Usually some internal fat or bowel can push through the weak spot/ hole making it bulge.
Gallbladders are removed in an operation called a cholecystectomy. The operation can be done as ‘keyhole surgery’ in which case, it is called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is the laparoscopic method that we plan to use for your operation.
Epigastric hernias are most common in young adults. They may develop after a period of lifting, straining or coughing. This can weaken the abdominal muscles, cause pain and allow a hernia to bulge through. Hernias are more common in people with heavy manual jobs.
This is a test to look at the left side of the large bowel or colon. It is done by a colonoscopy specialist.
Injecting Botox into muscle around the anus (back passage) will cause it to relax and reduce muscle tension. This should reduce any pain and will increase the blood flow to the fissure, encouraging it to heal naturally.
