The provision of healthcare within the UK is changing rapidly. NHS Hospitals have made significant advances towards meeting and reducing the current waiting list targets. The introduction of the proposed legal right to treatment within’18 weeks’ will present some Hospitals with formidable challenges.

Although excellent progress has been made in removing many of the hurdles which contributed to extended waiting lists, this success will bring with it further problems. There is no longer the spare surgical capacity within the NHS to maintain the rate of progress achieved over the last eighteen months.

In order to reduce internal waiting targets further and fill the gaps in our Hospital’s surgical provision, alternative providers will have to be found. The old boundaries between private and NHS care are breaking down. Increasingly new providers are entering the market from the independent sector and being used to increase NHS capacity.
