The One Health Group organised and ran a one and a half days course for GP’s on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th November at the Ice Sheffield Conference Centre.
This well attended event was organised by consultant orthopaedic surgeons Mr Fazal Ali and Mr James Fernandes. The course attracted more than 70 GP’s from the local region, including Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Worksop, Nottingham and also clinicians from further afield, including Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Surrey and London.
The course was delivered by a number of different clinical specialists, covering orthopaedic subspecialties, rheumatology, anaesthesia, and physiotherapy. Day one consisted of short individual presentations by each of the speakers which were tailored to ensure they were problem-based, accessible and relevant to the candidate’s interests.
Day two was based on a series of workshops, which enabled small groups of candidates to experience and learn from practical demonstrations of examination techniques, various injection techniques, physiotherapy practical sessions, case discussions with specialists and demonstration of nerve conduction studies.
The event was enthusiastically supported by the medical supply industry and the One Health Group would like to express our sincere thanks to those organisations who attended.
Our analysis of feedback forms disclosed that the course was extremely well received by all participants who commended the team on the organisation and format. It was universally felt to be excellent value for money.
Respondents stated that the information given was comprehensive, relevant and well-pitched for GP’s, with tips on how to hone in on relevant examinations by being aware of which problems were most likely to present in certain age groups.
The practical stations were particularly well reviewed, with comments on the unique opportunity to discuss problem cases with the ‘experts’ . The speakers were thought to be very professional, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about their subject areas, while at the same time being approachable.
Most attendees said they would return to a similar course next year without hesitation, perhaps with a longer day two to give more time for ‘hands-on’ procedures . The course manual (of the talks given) was thought to be very helpful.
Overall, this was thought to be an excellent course, professionally organised and well delivered.

Sheffield Sharks romped to a 93-66 victory over Mersey Tigers to become the first side to retain the BBL Cup.
The Sharks, who just edged past Cheshire Jets in last year's final, dominated league leaders Mersey.
Drew Sullivan opened the scoring for the Tigers but it was to be the only time they led throughout the game.
MVP Steve Dagostino netted a record 35 points, including eight three-pointers, and forward Mike Tuck added 18 of his own as Atiba Lyons' side eased the win.
It is the third time Sheffield have claimed the trophy, the first silverware of the season, following last year's victory over the Jets and their first win in 2004.
Mersey Tigers, who won the Cup in 2009, appeared to have the advantage going into the game, sitting comfortably at the top of the Championship, eight points ahead of Sharks, who lie fourth.
But Sheffield looked in control from the outset, taking a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to points from Tuck and Olu Babalola which cancelled out Sullivan and Andrew Thomson's efforts.
Tigers were left to rue missed opportunities in the second stanza, hitting the rim and missing from close-range on numerous occasions.
They looked unsure how to handle in-form Tuck and Sharks capitalised on their frailties, and by the end of the first half, Tuck had netted 14 points, giving his side a comfortable 51-25 lead.
Looking refuelled going into the third quarter, Tigers went out to right the wrongs of the first half, and defensively they improved and appeared to be focussing their efforts on stopping Tuck in his stride.
Sullivan and David Aliu, who scored 17 and 21 points respectively, worked tirelessly to drag the Tigers back into it, but more mistakes proved costly for Tony Garbelotto's side.
They only converted two out of 18 three-point attempts, the first coming from Aliu in the third quarter, and seemed to lack the precision which has been apparent in their league form.
And their woes increased every time Dagostino held possession.
The 25-year-old from New York, who is in his first season in Sheffield, netted 13 first-half points and continued to strike at every possible opportunity, hitting a total of eight from deep, three field goals and five free throws for a Cup final record.
Babalola added nine points to his five from the first half and, although the last scores of the game came from Jamal Williams, Sam Bogucki and Aliu for Tigers, it proved to be a mere consolation as Sharks took the Cup back to Sheffield for another year.
Sheffield Sharks have received a major financial boost with a naming rights deal which will see them line up as the One Health Sharks when the season begins on Friday.
The five-figure deal with One Health – a Sheffield-based group of specialist orthopaedic surgeons – will see Sharks carrying their name throughout the season.
Club chairman, Stephen Shore, said the agreement with One Health is excellent news for Sharks: "This is a really great way to end pre-season off the court before the serious on court action tips-off on Friday. One Health is a company that we are delighted to be associated with.
"They have demonstrated their commitment to the Sharks and we will be doing our utmost to repay them with successful performances from our team led by player-coach Atiba Lyons."
Mr Derek Bickerstaff, one of the UK's leading consultant orthopaedic surgeons and a director of One Health, said the deal with the Sharks is a good fit, particularly at a time when healthcare is being offered in new ways to patients:
"We're a small, young company which is looking to grow rapidly.
Increasingly NHS care is being carried out by independent organisations such as One Health through the 'Choose and Book' service.
"Personally I have worked with the Sharks for many years offering advice and, on occasions, operating on players.
"We wanted to raise our profile locally and regionally; by being allied with Sharks we'll be able to do this."
Sharks player coach Atiba Lyons, whose team begin the new season with a BBL Trophy match against Glasgow Rocks on Friday at the EIS, said: "I'm delighted to have One Health on board. To have that level of expertise close to hand is very reassuring. Basketball is a high impact sport so our ankles and knees can take quite a beating during the season."
"Quick diagnosis and treatment is the most important thing to getting an injured player back on court. With One Health on our bench I feel we have a great advantage."
It is with great pleasure we announce that One Health Group will be sponsoring the Sheffield Sharks basketball team for the forthcoming season. They will be named the One Health Sharks. The One Health Sharks are one of the premier teams in the English Basketball League playing their home games at the English Institute of Sport. The One Health Group offers comprehensive sports medicine support which will be invaluable for the One Health Sharks in the forthcoming season.
Player coach Atiba Lyons is looking forward to working with the One Health Group, “I’m delighted to have One Health on board. To have that level of expertise close to hand is very reassuring. Basketball is a high impact sport so our ankles and knees can take quite a beating during the season. Quick diagnosis and treatment is the most important thing to getting an injured player back on court. With One Health on our bench I feel we have a great advantage.”
Basketball is the fastest growing sport in the UK amongst teenagers. The One Health Sharks have a commitment to working in the community supported by BBraun, a co-sponsor of the One Health Sharks, and we fully support this development programme.
The sport is fast moving, exciting and family friendly. Come and join us supporting the One Health Sharks.
